The resume

An important part of a job application is the resume. But how can you convince with it and what must be included? You can find out in this blog article.

Why do I need a resume?

The resume is usually the first thing a recruiter sees from you. And since they usually only spend one or two minutes looking at your application documents, your resume must be convincing within a very short time.
In general terms, this document contains all the important information about your career and your personal data, so that HR professionals can decide whether you are a candidate for the next round of applications.

Curriculum vitae content

The CV should be no more than three A4 pages long and contain information about yourself right at the beginning, i.e.

  • full name
  • Date of birth
  • Address and contact options such as e-mail and telephone number
  • Origin and nationality and marital status.

Optionally, you can also insert a photo of yourself. This is more personal and shows openness, which always goes down well.
The main part of the document is taken up by your qualifications for the job.

Professional experience: If you have already gained professional experience, this must definitely be included in your resume. This shows HR specialists that you already know your way around the job. For each job, you can include a position description, the company and the most important core tasks in keywords.

Education and training: Also very important are relevant education and training courses you have completed or are currently attending. This shows what hard skills and knowledge you bring to the table. As with work experience, this is listed from newest to oldest. You can also indicate the final grades you have achieved.

Language skills and stays abroad: Nowadays, foreign languages are an important means of communicating with customers and work colleagues from all over the world. Therefore, indicate in your resume which languages you speak and also how well. For example, "English - very good spoken and written". Swiss German and High German can be listed separately.

Computer and software skills: Digitalization is making itself felt in many professions. Therefore, you can indicate all software skills relevant to the job, including how well you know the program.

Other skills relevant to the job: Depending on what kind of job it is, other information is relevant. For example, you can also mention driving licenses, hobbies, volunteer work and so on.

You should avoid

Sometimes there can be gaps in your resume. This is not a bad thing if you are open and honest about it. Avoid writing lies in your resume, especially when there are gaps. In general, exaggerations do not go down well in this document.
With a cluttered resume, recruiters have a hard time filtering out the important information. Make sure your writing is clean and concise. Likewise, what is written should be worded in a way that is understandable. Unimportant information and filler words should be deleted completely.
Spelling errors tend to creep in. Read the document again carefully before sending it or give your resume to someone else to proofread.
Using only years, rather than the entire date, is not enough. Most of the time, this is a way to cover up gaps. Make sure that you mention at least the month and the year.
